Leeds ware sugar bowl, 4 1/2" x 6 1/4", ca, 1790, Castleford, England. Bygones were indeed bygones when transatlantic commerce resumed after the Revolutionary War. English manufacturers shipped all manner of American patriotic goods to an eager public in the United States. This cream colored bowl with blue trim is one such piece. A high relief bust of George Washington graces one side while an American eagle with shield decorates the other. Both of these devices have a dark golden glaze that highlights them against the pottery background. An exceptional piece of early political Americana, the bowl has remarkable surfaces with only the most minor chipping on high points. VG condition.
