HARRISON, William Henry (1773-1841) 9th President of the United States. Governor of Indiana Territory from 1800-1812, Major General of the War of 1812, U.S. Congressman from 1816-1819, U.S. Senator from 1825-1828. He defeated Martin Van Buren for election in 1840, and died after only a month in office. Autograph Letter TWICE Signed, "Willm. H. Harrison," Washington, April 17, 1818, 1pp., with 3 pp blank, and integral address panel. As U.S. Representative, Harrison writes Brigadier General J(ames) Miller, in part "The President (Monroe) has no power to grant preemptions & the Congress will never approve them but in very peculiar circumstances - perhaps I may say such as will never again occur - since every proposition of the kind has been rejected at this session ...Your friend, Willm H Harrison." the integral address panel is also addressed in his hand, "Free Willm. H. Harrison." Letter has tear at top, ink bleeds a little, still scarce, twice-signed Harrison letter. James Miller, served as a Brigadier General during the War of 1812, Miller was taken prisoner of war in 1813 and was later exchanged. In 1814 Miller was Colonel of the 21st Infantry Regiment and led his men in the capture of the British artillery at the Battle of Lundy's Lane where his "I will try sir!" quote became famous and where he earned the name of the "Hero of Lundy's Lane". Miller was made a Brigadier General by the U.S. Congress after the battle but soon left the army in 1819. Miller was appointed by Monroe as the first governor of the Arkansas Territory and served as superintendent of Indian Affairs for the Arkansas Territory.
