A complete issue of Harper’s Weekly, June 5, 1897, 24pp., disbound, VG. From the interior is a full page illustration by W.A. Rogers, "Sunday Morning in the Virginia Pines". There is a related article written by Rogers describing, in subtly racist terms, the church event. In small part, “The Virginia darky is a happy creature. His brother in other parts of the country may suffer from ambition, discontent, a desire to better himself .... but he and his dog are well pleased with the world and themselves. ...Then the old spirit of the tropical forests ... breaks through the thin crust of white folks’ manners, and the Virginia darky is once more an African.”The segregation churches became the center of life for the free Blacks.
