A rare manuscript Confederate furlough document, 1p. oblong 8vo., issued to Pvt. Ambrose M. Hite, 97th Virginia Militia by Captain DAVID M. DOVEL (1836-1908, later 7th Va. Cav. WIA Reams Station, Va., Aug. 23, 64) while signed and made official by Virginia Brigadier General GILBERT S. MEEM (1824-1908) and Colonel MANN SPITLER (1825-89). [n. p., but Page County, Virginia], July 28, 1861, in part: "Whereas Ambrose M. Hite a private in my company is now taking the measles and believing it would be better for him to return to his home in Page…I do hereby grant him a furlough for six days at the end of which the said Hite will return again to my company if possible."
