A touching war-date Union soldier's condolence letter, 3pp. 8vo., written by Musician John C. Copp, Co. G, 19th Massachusetts Vols., "Harrison Landing, Va., July 19, 1862" to the mother of his fallen comrade, George R. White of Cambridge, Mass., in part: "…I am very sorry to inform you that everything was lost in our retreat. The boys were ordered to throw away everything just before they entered the fight. The young men that was with Geo. [R. White, Co. G, 19th Mass.] when he was shot says that he did not speak after he received the second shot. Everything that belonged to Geo. was lost. The Rebels came down on them so suddenly that they did not have time to take his watch. Everything he had that was of any value was about him when he was shot. I thanked the boys for you for there kindness. The boys one and all felt very bad for George. He was a general favorite with all. He was a good soldier. He went into the field and received the enemies fire without flinching and fell as brave a man as there is in this…army…the Rebels now hold the ground where the battle was fought and it would be useless to think of trying to get anything. If I should ever happen…across anything that belonged to George I will certainly send whatever it may be…". VG
