War-date Union officer's letter written by Captain F. Frank Godfrey, 1st Louisiana Cavalry (US), 3pp, 4to, "New Orleans, August 29, 1862," reading, in part: "…I have raised my Company, and am now Captain of Cavalry, and am clear of the Battery I hope for ever…I recruited my company in a little over three weeks, the men are nearly all Germans, a few Irish and some Americans, all Northern men…I was not in the fight at Baton Rouge, we whipped them terribly there and they had double our force. Malcomb Long fought splendidly, he has been promoted from the ranks to a 1st Lieutenantcy, for his gallantry; the 14th Me. Regt. fought like heroes. Genl. Butler praised them highly…Malcom was here to see me the other day. He fought by himself as a sort of sharp shooter. Malc you know is a splendid shot. He told me he fired fifteen times said he took it coolly, waited for a good shot and did not throw away any powder. Every one of Malcolm's shots probably killed or wounded a rebel…" Fine condition.
