War-date Union officer's letter written by Captain F. Frank Godfrey, 1st Louisiana Cavalry (US), 3pp, 4to, "New Orleans, Sept. 22, 1862," reading, in part: "…I have got my saddles and horses, and am drilling every day, and my men are improving very fast. I hope to get my arms soon also, we are to have Sharps rifles, revolvers and sabers…I think I shall have the best mounted corps in the department…I saw an account the other day of the Second Maine in the battle at Manassas in which it lost 114 men. I think that Regt. has done its share. I should like to know as to what officers have been killed and wounded…almost every officer drinks and I do not remember…having met but one officer who was a teetotaler…in every fight rum gains more laurels than the officers...some of the most contemptible fellows in the department fought well at Baton Rouge so you see that rum has a good deal to do with this nation…" Fine condition.
