Autograph Letter Signed, “N. Hayward Aide De Camp” to Major General Nathaniel Goodwin, 1pp. quarto, December 31, 1811, Plymouth, Massachusetts, addressed to Wettram Dannison, Adjt. General in Boston, and reads in part: “...I am directed by the Major General 5th Division to inform you...The Commanding Officers of Third Brigade will order the Commissioned Officers of the two companies of artillery in his Brigade to convene for the choice of a major commandant of that corps & appoint either a colonel or major to preside at the election...” Good condition.Nathaniel Goodwin (d. 1819). Revolutionary War brigadier general in Massachusetts Militia in charge of enlistments for the Army in his state. Among them were 28 African Americans. On the surrender of Burgoyne and his men, Goodwin was placed in command of the guard over them at Somerville. Burgoyne's sword fell into his possession. He authored two books: List of Revolutionary Soldiers and New England Early Settlers.
