Creamware Commemoration Pitcher, Hanley England, Richard Hall & Son, 1824, 5”, minor surface age cracks only add character. This is a wheel-thrown item with a applied cast handle. Old style transfers with hand painted black enamel on the handle, lip, and spout. One one side is the image of George Washington encircled in a laurel with words “Washington, His Country’s Father.” Above this image are the words “First in War, First in Peace, and First in the Hearts of his Fellow Citizens.” On the opposite side is the LaFayette image also encircled with words “Fayette, The Nations Guest.” Then above that image “In Commemoration of the visit of Gen’l La Fayette to the U.S. of America, in the year 1824.” Below the decorated spout is a large Heraldic Eagle, thirteen stars above, Pluribis Unon banner held in the beak. this is surrounded with “Republicans Are Not Always Ungrateful.” The glaze shows pitting and imperfections. Some of the age cracks appear to go deep. Still, an incredible piece. In the American Revolution, Lafayette served as a major-general in the Continental Army under George Washington. In 1824, President James Monroe invited Lafayette to the United States as the "nation's guest"; during the trip, he visited all twenty-four states in the union at the time. In honor of his contributions to the American Revolution, many cities and monuments throughout the United States bear his name.
