War-date Confederate soldier Autograph Letter Signed by W.W. Raffield, Co. D, 4th South Carolina State Line Infantry, 2pp. quarto, Sumter, August 25, 1863, and reads in part: “...All eyes are turned towards Charleston at this time. The Yankees have knocked one side out & are shooting through the other but the fort is not to be give up. They are making sand ballast in the old place & are going to stand it. The Yankees have been throwing shell in the city Friday night, commenced Sunday night again but what damage has been done there appears to be a certainty that we have two guns that have just run the blockade that are larger than any about Charleston. The balls weigh 7 or 8 hundred lbs & hope it will get to the palce in time to clear the harbor of Yankee ironclads....I am very near bearfooted...” Fine condition.
