War-date Union soldier Autograph Letter Signed by Frank Sawyer, 5th New Hampshire Infantry, 2pp. octavo on “Stand by the Flag” stationary with matching cover, November 9, 1861, Camp Casey, Bladensburg, Maryland and reads in part: “...Last night we had orders to pick up and be ready to march...There were three Regts the 5th NH, 4th RI, and 45th Penn....The object of our march was to protect the Union men at the election. Our Brigade was on the left column of 16 thousand....I got a pass and went down on election day to see how they performed. About half of the people were drunk and the remainder felt pretty good. Some were cheering for the Union, and some for Jeff Davis...This Brigade is commanded by Gen. Howard of Maine. While we were goine we heard some pretty heavy firing in the direction of the Potomac. We hear firing every day from here...” Fine condition.
