Letter of apology by Confederate Surgeon J.W. Oslin at "Reed Hospital/West Point, Georgia April 13, 1864" to the Surgeon in charge of Confederate Hospitals S.M. Stout. Single sheet 8 x 10, pale blue paper; neatly penned entirely in his hand. Apologizes for "relieving from duty in this hospital" the steward, but his "Superior Druggist" concluded unthoughtfully to send them up to you for orders. I am fully aware of the error I committed. There was no intention on my part to disregard the authority of my superior officers. I beg your kind indulgence for the offense. I will be more careful… you will remember [sometime ago] that I had one or two very inefficient attendants, requesting you at the same time to send me some competent men and that I would order them to report to you for assignment elsewhere. You immediately sent me down three more attendants. Believing that the matter would be fully understood I at once [relieved the other men from duty]." Fading and light but all readable. Reverse with official docketing.
