A complete and authentic issue of The Genrleman’s Magazine, July 1768, 48pp. disbound, VG. From the second page “Interesting Advice From America, Boston, June 20, 1768” we have a full page report of the Liberty Riot. In small part “Last Friday Fe’enight the officers of the customs made a siezure of a sloop belonging to John Hancock, Esq., was improved as a store to put some oil aboard; and with the assistance of the crew of the Romney, cut away her saft and carried her under guns of the man-of-war.This conduct provoked the people ...” ... plus, a full page illustration “A Magic Square of Squares” with a 3/4 page explanation “Surprizing Properties of Numbers placed in Dr. Franklin’s Magic Square of Squaures”. It proceeds with six defined properties.The ship LIBERTY was originally owned by John Hancock. In 1768, British officials alleged that Bostonians locked a customs official in the Liberty's cabin while the cargo of Madeira wine was unloaded in an effort to evade the Townshend Acts. In retaliation, the British government confiscated Liberty, and she was towed away. Smuggling charges against Hancock were eventually dropped, but Liberty remained confiscated.
