STUART, Alexander Hugh Holmes (1807-1891) was a prominent Virginia lawyer and American political figure associated with several political parties. He was United States Secretary of the Interior 1850-53. On June 14, 1861, Stuart was among those signing the ceremonial secession ordinance. Postal Cover signed by “A.H. H. Stuart” free Oct 9, Washington, DC postmark addressed to Captain Kenton Harper who was a leader of the Virginia Militia and when Virginia seceeded, he led the Virginia troops up to the point when Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson took the reins.
