A good early war-date Confederate medical staff officer's letter, 1p. 4to., written by Asst. Surgeon John G. Gordon, 38th Virginia, "L. C. H.", [Louisa Court House, Va.], July 8, 1861 to Dr. Churchill, reading, in part: "Leadie told me on yesterday that you had requested him to send the ice at George's to Richmond. There is not a great deal of ice there & I think it would be bad policy. There is no bacon & the ice is necessary to keep meat for the negroes. I have been on idea of going there myself to stay a part of my time so that it will be [?] for that reason. When did you hear from George- if you see him tell him to write to me - & you do the same. I came from Ch.ville [Charlottesville] yesterday. All well - yrs. truly, J. L. Gordon." PLUS; a war-date Confederate "Louisa Court House, Va., July 8, 1861, Paid 5" postmaster's provisional cover addressed "Dr. John G. Gordon, Medical Staff C. S. A., Richmond, Va." Negligible tape stain at the left margin, else VG.
