War-date" Confederate States of America," partly printed War Department pass, 1p. oblong 12mo., issued to Reverend P. A. Johnson and family to return to Norfolk issued by War Department clerk John B. Jones "for the Secretary of War," Richmond, [Va.], Sept. 25, 1861, reading, in part: "Rev. P. A. Johnson & family permission to visit Norfolk on honor not to communicate in writing or verbally, for publication, any fact ascertained. [?] enemies discretion of Genl. Huger to send him with flag to Fortress Monroe. J. B. Jones for Secretary of War." JOHN BEAUCHAMP JONES (1810-1866) before the war a popular novelist specializing in the American South and West. He served as a high ranking clerk in the Confederate war department and his diary, kept during his service to the belligerent government, that was published as, "A Rebel War Clerk's Diary at the Confederate States Capital." Near fine.
