A rare battle of Missionary Ridge Confederate soldier's letter, 3pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. John B. Cochran, Co. G, 36th Georgia Infantry, "Camp at Dalton, Ga., Dec. 1, 1863" to his cousin Eliza Jane Hardman of Stone Mountain, Georgia, reading, in part: "-we have had a very hard time in the fit and on the retreat. We had a heap of men kild and wounded on our side but we never had narey men kild in our Reg't. but several wounded in hit - we have maid another stand at Dalton - I am in hopes that we will not hafter fall back any further. Cousin Jane. I have got to the 36 Ga. Regt, Co. F and have not had time to rite since I got here - I don't think that this war will last mutch longer for this army is the worst de moralized than anyone that I ever seen and I don't think we can have pervision to carry hit on mutch longer. Jane, I would like very mutch to be at home this Cristmas for the times is very lonesome hear and if I could sutra up sim fun shore - I am very well satisfied in the Company so far - your cuisine as ever, John B. Cochran." PLUS; a very rare Confederate Army of the Tennessee field cancelled "Chattanooga, Tenn., Dec. 2, 1863" transmittal cover, addressed: "E. J. Hardman, Stone Mountain, Georgia." Following the battle of Chickamauga the Confederate Army of Tennessee evacuated Chattanooga, but not before taking that city's date stamp with them. The army then used that date stamp "in the field' until January, 1864. Fully transcribed. Near fine.
