War-date Confederate cavalryman's letter, 1p. 4to., written by Pvt. Horatio Nelson, Co. A, 4th Virginia Cavalry, "Near Green Springs, Ar. Co., Va., June 12, 1864," written two weeks before dying after being shot in the chest in action at Simaria Church, Va., reading, in part: "Dear Jane, R. Shepherd [Pvt. Richard H. Shepherd, Co. A, 4th Virginia Cavalry] says he will carry a note from me to you - the Genl. [William C. Wickham] is about his horse & you know what is next - thanks be to God that - I'm safe and sound. We had a desperate engagement yesterday. Our Company had 4 wounded. R. Towles [Sgt. Robert C. Towles] supposed to be mortally wounded, another one of my friends, Poor fellow, & he will be better off in the next world. Expect to have a fight this evening - Oh; [I] want to see you all so badly - 4 o'clock evening. The desperate fight has commenced near Gordonville - am writing this this note on the Field of Contest. May God bless us with a victory - this is no place to write - give my love to all inquiring friends. Tell them I'm yet in the land of living - Horatio Nelson, Co. A, 4th Va. Cav., Wickham's Brigade." Negligible paper loss at folds with ancestral library stamp, else VG.
