IVERSON, Alfred (1829-1911) was a lawyer, an officer in the Mexican–American War, a U.S. Army cavalry officer, and a Confederate general in the American Civil War. He served in the 1862–63 campaigns of the Army of Northern Virginia as a regimental and later brigade commander. His career was fatally damaged by a disastrous infantry assault at the first day of the Battle of Gettysburg. War Date Autograph Letter Signed “Alfred Iverson”, 1pp., pencil. Datelined Hd. Qtr. Cav. Div., Dec. 26th, 1864, 7:40 PM. In part, “General Wheeler’s order communicating General Hardee’s dispatch directing a movement across the Oguchee except in case I find the enemy not moving westward is rec’d. A dispatchjust rec’d from Col. Hawkins indicates the enemy istead .. is returning to Savannah ... We have captured and sent forward to Waynesboro, about fifty prisoners. Very respectfully, Your Obd. Servt. Alfred Iverson, Brig. Gen’l.
