A Federal soldier 2pp., letter written by William F. Smith of Vet. Vol. Datelined Head Quarters 1st Regiment Delaware Vet. V., June 30, 1864. In part, “When I wrote you yesterday I forgot to send a Rebel letter which I got on the charge of May 12th. I wish you would preserve it among my papers. It belonged to a North Carolina Soldier ...” The enclosed Confederate letter was written by Berry Medford who, on 6/12/1861 was mustered into "K" Co. NC 1st Infantry, Wounded 6/15/1863 Winchester, VA; POW 4/6/1865 Farmville, VA; Confined 4/8/1865 Point Lookout, MD. Medford’s 2pp. letter is datelined, Camp Near Courthose, May 3, 1864 . In small part, “I can see the Yankees every day but the time is all quiet hear but I am afraid it wont be long for we expect to fight early May ...”
