WHEELER, Joseph "Fighting Joe" (1836-1906) was an American military commander and politician. He was a cavalry general in the Confederate States Army in the 1860s during the American Civil War, and then a general in the United States Army during both the Spanish–American War and Philippine–American War near the turn of the twentieth century. For much of the Civil War he served as the senior cavalry general in the Army of Tennessee and fought in most of its battles in the Western Theater. Autograph Letter Signed, “J. Wheeler, Maj. Genl.”, 2pp., pencil, datelined Hayes Cav Corp, About seven miles from Columbia, February 18, 1865. In full, The enemy have crossed Crane Creek in my front with a force of Cavalry. Some prisoners from the 17th Corp just brought state that that Corps is moving up the railroad towards Winnsboro. The 15th Corps was still in camp when they started to march this morning. Yr Obdt Srt, J. Wheeler”. Then on the reverse, “PS The bridge over Crane Creek is burning but the enemy crossed at a force above the bridge.”
