Paroled Confederate soldier’s 2pp. letter written by Robt. R. Hemphill, who enlisted on 3/10/1862 as a Sergeant, mustering into "G" Co. SC 1st Orr's Rifles Infantry. Datelined Aug 24, 1863. In part “I am now on steamer Georgia at anchor at City Point. I expect to get to Dixie in a few hours. I was captured at Falling Waters and first confined in thye City Jail, Baltimore. ... If I am paroled I will try to get home but if I am exchanged, I will go back to the regt. ... Some from the jail were sent to Point Lookout ...” Aug 25th - “At hospital in Petersburg a paroled prisoner. I will need socks, overshirts, a pair of boots or shoes ... I was barefooted when captured ...” On the reverse of this letter is Hemphill’s uncle’s letter to Hemphill. In small part, “We traveled to to the jail to see John. Bot notwithstanding the order from Genl Schneck was not permitted to see him. ...” It continues with family news.
