A good Confederate Soldier’s letter, 2pp., written by Robt. R. Hemphill, who enlisted on 3/10/1862 as a Sergeant, mustering into "G" Co. SC 1st Orr's Rifles Infantry. Dateline On The Field, May 14, 1864, 2-1/2PM, in part “Thank God I’m still safe. .. In the Wilderness we were in a desparate fight the first day and slightly the second. Loss of the regt in killed and wounded 106. The 12th we were in again. Loss 105.Johnson wounded - Chiles very slightly. I have not heard from Calvin Galloway and am afraid he was captured. ... We were in a desparate place. The Yankees were right on top of us in overwelming force and in 20 steps from me they had a piece of artillery firing away as hard as they could. The same distance from me a caison exploded with deafening roar,. Bullets filled the air and a man touching me almost had his brains scattered with a minie ...”
