A good Confederate Soldier’s letter, 1pp., written by Robt. R. Hemphill, who enlisted on 3/10/1862 as a Sergeant, mustering into "G" Co. SC 1st Orr's Rifles Infantry. Datelined Near Hanover Junction, May 25th (1864), 3PM, 1pp., pencil. In part, “On the 23rd we got into a hot fight of about an hour. Miller is safe. I am nearly exhausted but well. ... We have slaughtered thousands of Yankees but I don’t see that we have crippled them much. They have an overwhelming force. We were not whipped at Spotsylvania C.H.. Our regt. has lost 247 killed, wounded and missing . We were engagedat the wilderness, two days at Spotsylvania C.H. and two at Hanover besides being exposed nearly every day since the 4th May. Calvin Galloway is prisoner. I am tired and dirty but ib tolerable health. ...”
