Colorful war-date Union soldier's patriotic letter sheet printed poem, entitled: "Soldier's Memento" given by Pvt. Leander T. Hallet, Co. G, 3rd Maine Vols. to his buddy, Musician John E. French, Co. B, 14th Maine regiment, New England Division, New Orleans who died of disease in New Orleans in December, 1862. He is buried in Chalmette National Military Cemetery. The song is also addressed to John's father, forty-one year old Franklin B. French of the 13th Maine who was wounded in action at the battle of Sabine Cross Roads, La., on April 8, 1864. The song, reads, in small part: "My friend, I'm thinking of you now - every day fife and drums play, inspiring me bolder. I do not fear death when I hear that old tune, "Yankee Doddle" - and sing-God save the Stripes and Stars-and "Yankee Doodle Dandy!" Much more patriotic content. Overall VG.
