Three letters written by James Cornell Biddle’s future father-in-law, William M. Merideth, also to his daughter, Gertrude. Meredith was elected Pennsylvania's attorney general in the 1860 election, and served for two terms (1861-1867). In 1861, as a delegate to a Peace Conference, he worked unsuccessfully to prevent the southern states from seceding from the Union.Dateline, Attorney General’s Office, Harrisburg, July 9, 1861, in part “Willie has been appointed Military Secretary by Gen. McCall. ... Say nothing to any body about this appointment unless Willie accepts it, which I hope he will do. ....”, plus, Datelined Harrisburg, July 10, 1861, in part “I hope you will hear soon from Jim. I have no doubt they are moveing ... I am glad Willie is here. He is in a favorable position as Military Secretary to Gen. McCall ...”, plus, Datelined Harrisburg, Dec. 29, 1862, in part. “Give my kindest regards to Jim. I hope you will enjoy your visit to Washington, when it is ended, I shall be right glad to have you home again. ...”
