War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Alfred A. Thayer, Co. B, 96th Ohio Vols., [n. p., but Camp Delaware, Ohio], August 16, 1862," to his wife, in part: "- we are all well and ingoring ourself the best kind. We got to Newark about one o'clock, then went to Columbus and had a good time on the rode stopping and picking blackberries and corn - got behind but the train was waiting for us and hurried us right off - we got to Delary [Delaware] at 5 in the evening and come to camp - they had no super for us. We went to a farm house and gut our suser for 12 1/2 cts apiece - came back to camp without a blanket but I never slept better - I gut in with some of the boys that had plenty of them. I did not git tirad last night. Went to town and slept some in private house - we went to the tavern and slept for 25 cts apiece, Jack, Dan [Daniel Keefer], Lafet [William McH. Lafferee] and my little self. We fore sleep together - we only lack one company make out the regiment and we expect it tomorrow and then we will have a fine time. We are fixen tents as fast as we can - we received our overcoats today but nothing else in the clothing yet. But half received our arms - we crossed the wire Bridge over the river last night - the bridge swayed so that we could hardly walk. We had a good time - our company will bee examined tomorrow. Dr. has every man pull of[f] boots, stockings and pants up above his knees - very peculiar - in care of Captain [Joseph] Leonard, A. A. Thayer." The original stamped transmittal cover is included.
