War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written on "Union and Constitution" patriotic stationery, by Pvt. Alfred A. Thayer, Co. B, 96th Ohio Vols., [n. p., but Camp Delaware, Ohio], August 26, 1862," to his wife, in part: "- there is a great bustle hear - we are going to leave here - for Columbus - Kentucky. The boys enjoy themselves the best we can. Hope you coming up and I will come home as soon as I can. We have not drawn our money yet and don't know when - I stood guard Sunday and - fetched three men up a standing at the point of the bayonet. They could not fool me. I stood on the opposite side of the river. We put a few in the guard house. We [are] enjoying ourselves the best kind - tell Mr. Davis I like the service if there was not so much swearing and card paying - I can git along without - I take no part in that. My seat is getting hard. Jack and me sent our clothing Keefer excepting our shirts - dear wife I forgot you not as long as life shall last - place me in hart fore I now that you have one good day - A. A. Thayer."
