Payroll Muster, Pre-printed and filled out in manuscript, 31” x 20-1/2” issued for Company F, &1st Ohio Vol. Infantry, for period December 31, 1862 through February 28, 1863. The accounting covers 1 Lieut., 3 Sergeants, 4 Corporals and 46 Privates. Under the column “REMARKS” we find an astonishing number of “Absent without leave from December 20, 1862” ... 29 AWOLS! All were privates. On the reverse is the explanation for this. “The company were taken prisoners and parolled at Clarksville, Tn. August 18, 1862 by Lt. Col. Woodward C.S. Cavalry ... Reported at Camp Chase August 26, 1862 - were exchanged and ordered to rejoin their regiment at Fort Henry, Tenn. and report to General Rosecrans Dec. 20, 1862. ... The company Books, Rolls & ect are retained by the former commander Capt. Kramer (dismissed from service) who refuses to give them up.”
