A rare war-date Union sutler's pay partly-printed payment receipt, reading, in full: "March 17th, 1863. Paymaster 89th Regiment Ohio V. U. S. A. on the First Pay Day to the Order of W. Capers, Sutler 89th Regiment, Ohio V U. S. A. Two Dollars and deduct the same from my pay for services to the U. S. A. B. Delgarne, $200. Company K, 89th Regiment Ohio V. U. S. A." Anderson B. Delgarne enlisted at age 41 in August 1862. He was transferred into the V. R. C. in late 1863 and was mustered out in September, 1865. Endorsed on the verso by his Captain Wesley R. Adams who was incarcerated at Libby Prison after being captured during the battle of Chickamauga on September 19, 1863. He later escaped from Libby Prison, along with many other prisoners on the night of February 9, 1864. Expected wear, else VG.
