Nice Union soldier’s letter written by Albert S. Wood who mustered into "Batty F" Co. RI 1st Light Artillery, 3/4/1862. The 3pp., letter is datelined Point of Rocks, VA, Oct. 8, 1864, written to his mother. Advises he has only a few moments to spare ... will send $60 either by Uncle Thomas or tyhe way I sent it before .... Then he writes, “The Johnnies took the first from me on the 29th of last month for a piece of shell hit me on the cheek and started the blood with the corner of it. The same shell before it burst, broke two of the caisson wheels all to pieces and cut two legs of the nigh lead horse, two legs off of the nigh swing horse, and one leg off the lead horse of the caisson. One of the pieces of the same shell after it burst went through one horse’s body and took two men’s heads off. The shell weighed 100 lbs. ...from A.S.W.”
