A good war-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Sgt. Nelson Garey, Co. B, 38th New Jersey Vols., Fort Powhatan, [Bermuda Hundred, Virginia], Oct. 17, 1864, in part: " - I must tell you that we was out on a scout - we got some pigs, chickens and plenty of apples. We was about 40 miles from camp - we stopped at a very fine house on a plantation with seven hundred acreas - it belongs to a rebel. There was no one there but an old negro that could scarcely get about. He was over seventy years of age, an old woman and her daughter. They was white. The girl was a nice good looking girl. She was a rebel girl. She gave me this sweet shrub that I send to you and this cotton. There is a whole field of cotton there. She told me to send them to my home and I will do so. I captured a rebel sword. I am gong to fetch it hoe if a live to do so. Our cavalry got about 20 prisoners today and brought them to camp. They was all negroes. They took the oath of allegiance. We seen a rebel in the road just ahead of us - we took after him and I told him to stop but he would not and I shot at him - did not hit him, but he stopped and I made him surrender his sword to me and Wash Philips got his revolver - we took him prisoner - your husband, N. Garey. Direct to Sergeant Nelson Garey, Company B, 38th New Jersey Volinteers." Minor spotting, else VG.
