A four page letter written by John R. Arrison to Amelia Proctor Milford, datelined Washington DC, April 5, 1865. In part, “But no words can express the excitment ... I went to the post office. The clerks were all gone, everybody on holiday. Shops were closed. The bells of church, factory, fire station were pealing their loudest chimes, while the cordon of forts around the city thundered ... the streets of the city were dense mass of people. ... getting off various exclamations such as ‘How are you Jeff’, ‘Bully for Grant”, ‘Bully for Abe” ... Among those listened to Andy Johnson ... gave us a noble speech ... I also heard Stanton speaking ... But last night was a grans gala. The public buildings were all illuminated ... On the front of the Capitol was a large transparancy ‘The Lord Hath Done This: It is wonderful in our eyes.’ ... Surely the day has come when the doencast patient races from years of waiting, worn, shall lift to light their faces. In the calm of Fredom’s morn ...”
