SYMMES, John Cleves (1742-1814) was a delegate to the Continental Congress from New Jersey, and later a pioneer in the Northwest Territory. He was also the father-in-law of President William Henry Harrison. He was chairman of the Sussex County, New Jersey Committee of Safety in 1774. When the Revolutionary war began in earnest, he served as Colonel of the 3rd Regiment of the Sussex County militia. Clipped from a document "John Cleves Symmes", 3-1/2" x 1-1/4", dark signature beneath Isaac Smith. TIFFIN, Edward (1766-1829) was an American politician from Ohio. Tiffin became the first doctor in Chillicothe, traveling on horseback, day and night, to treat the afflicted. He arrived with a letter addressed to the governor of the Northwest Territory, Arthur St. Clair from George Washington, recommending him for public office. Preprinted Document Signed "Edw'd Tiffin" as Prothonotary on 8" x 6-1/2" Territory of the United States, North West of the Ohio to the Sheriff commanding that he cause thirty-two dollars and 68 cents from John Johnston, March Term, 1800. Document Territory of the United States, N.W. of the Ohio, 8" x 6", VG. June 19th 1801, court bond established for James Ferguson for $100 "That he will maintain the peace toward all the good people of the Territory ..."
