Wednesday morning we crossed the Rappahannock River and followed along the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountain. We had a foot race with the Yankees for possession of Snickers Gap. They was trying to get to the gap to cross the mountain and get in Ewell's rear. But we beat them by about a half day's march.... yesterday we crossed the Shenandoah River at Snicker's Ferry. the water was up under our arms and we had to put our cartridge boxes around our neck ... we marched through the river with our clothes and shoes on. ... I suppose that you have that Ewell has captured Winchester and nearly all of Milroys force but Milroy himself escaped in the night. .. I expect that we will take another trip to Maryland as our Cavalry has already been over ...."
