Letter Signed "Jno K Mitchell" on scarce stationary "C.S. Navy Department, Office of Orders and Detail, Richmond Va." November 26, 1863 to Lieut. J.L Kennard CSN, Com. CSS Isondiga, Savannah Ga., 1pp. In small part, "Your letters of the 8th, 9th, and 20th of October addressed to the Flag officer ... and referred to this Department, reporting First Lieutenant A.E. Armstrong CSN for disobedience of orders, drunkenness, and absence without leave, have been received. ... You will be pleased to forward to this Department ... report in the form of charges ... to be submitted to a Naval General Court Martial." CSS Isondiga was a small wooden gunboat without masts that served in the Confederate States Navy during the American Civil War. Isondiga operated in waters around Savannah, Georgia, and in Saint Augustine Creek, Florida, from April 1863 to December 1864, Lieutenant Joel S. Kennard commanding. She accompanied ironclad ram CSS Atlanta in the engagement in which Atlanta was captured on June 17, 1863. She escaped from Savannah on December 21, 1864 before the city fell to the forces of U.S. General William T. Sherman. She was later burned by her commanding officer and crew to prevent seizure by the Union. John K. Mitchell was a one of six commanders of The James River Squadron in the Confederate navy during the American Civil War.
