Confederate Soldier's Prisoner Letter, 1/2 page, written by J(ames) B. Nelson who enlisted on 6/1/1861 as a private into "B" Co. GA 2nd Battn Infantry. In full, datelined Prison Camp Point Lookout Md, Dec. 19th '64, "I learned from Nelson that you wished the boys to write you from Macon. There is about twenty here. Powell is here yet Sergt of a co (minor paper loss) doing well. Sidney Lanier, Howard Cutter & quite a number more here. I don't think you know many of them. Dock is well. I am in reasonable health. Address in care Major Brady, Co. I, Six Division." Lanier and his brother Clifford served as pilots aboard English blockade runners. Lanier's ship, the Lucy, was captured by the USS Santiago de Cuba, on November 3, 1864. Refusing to take the advice of the British officers on board to don one of their uniforms and pretend to be one of them, he was captured. He was incarcerated in a military prison at Point Lookout in Maryland, where he contracted tuberculosis. He a musician, poet and author, hailed in the South as the "poet of the Confederacy".
