This prisoner of war (POW) single page letter, with original cover which has POW postmark, was written by Confederate officer Robert Samuel Perry, Jr. Robert enlisted as a private in Co. C, 8th Louisiana Regiment. By August he had been promoted to 1st Lieutenant of his company and shortly thereafter was tagged to be the adjutant of the regiment. He served in every major battle of the war in the Army of the Northern Virginia from 1st Bull Run to Gettysburg, except Antietam when he was sick. He was captured at "Rappahannock River Bridge" on 7 November 1863 and held a prisoner at Johnson's Island near Sandusky, Ohio, for nineteen months before he was released on 13 June 1865 at the age of 30. Datelined Johnson's Island, Ohio, February 16, 1865. In full "I can account for your reticence only on the supposition that you failed to receive my last letter written sometime since. I will write you but a simple note to call your attention to the fact that you have a living friend on this island. Exchange is all the talk here at present-everyone is in a fidget. I hope to get off but am not by any means certain of it. One hundred, mostly of the sick, left today. Should you write me and fail to get answers, you may conclude that I have been fortunate. My health is now quite good. Send me copies of K. M. I catalogues for 1860 and for 1861. Regards to your family & other friends."
