Union sutler's 8pp. letter written by "J.W. Given" datelined Bottom Bridge, June 1, 1862, pencil. In small part, " About noon a stir arose in the camp, the battle having been opened ... Myself and others started toward the scene of suffering and death ... we entered a large mansion used as a hospital ... There being but one surgeon there the prospect of getting services was poor ... ... Lt. Maynard wounded in the shoulder ... Andrew Ryan had one finer shot of ... Wm. Clark was struck on the side of the neck by a piece of shell so as to knock him senseless for some time ... Wm. Draher was reported wounded ... It can now be said that the 63rd have been tried and proven. Genl. Jameson had two horses killed under him. Col. Hayes had one killed one wounded. Lt. Col. Morgan is dangerously wounded. ... the battle was renewed this morning at a most furious rate. ... Wm Clark ... had his canteen and haversack shot off him in the battle ... After his 60 rounds of cartridge was done, he a supply from a dead man & fired 15 more. ... They could not get at our dead and wounded till yesterday. ..."
