Four Letters written by J(ames) Warner who on 10/8/1862 he mustered into "M" Co. RI 1st Cavalry and on 1/7/1864 he transferred into "M" Co. NH 1st Cavalry. He was listed as POW 6/18/1863 Middleburg, VA and Absent sick 12/15/1863 Hospital, Washington, DC. The first letter, 2pp., to his parents, New York, Oct. 11, 1862, in part, "We shall probably leave her this afternoon for Washington. We got $325 bounty in Rhode Island .... The second letter, Camp Stoneman, Oct. 30, 1863 to his parents, in part, "I am much better than the last time I wrote .. I hope the bottle of medicine you sent will do me some good ... I wish you would send me another bottle. We can not get anything of that kind without going to Washington, about five miles .. The third letter, Camp Stoneman, near Washington, Nov. 23rd 1863, to his sister, in small part, "As I had such good luck as to get my box yesterday ... I believe I have tried a little of everything .. Another lot of Cavalry just started for the front .." The fourth letter, St. Elizabeth Hospital, Washington, Jan 4th, 1864, to his mother, in part, "I will write a few lines and explain matters a little ... the Governor of Rhode Island sent an order for all soldiers ... to be transferred to Portsmith Grove Hospital in RI. ...Father will remain and go with us ..." Also included, CDV of a seated John Warner with backmark "Tobell General Hospital, USA, Portsmith Grove, R.I.".
