Union soldier's letter, signed only with initials, J.M.S., 4pp, Falmouth VA, Jan. 12, 1862 (mis-dated, actually 1863), to his "Friend Badger" with original cover sent to New Hampshire. In small part, "For all I heard from you ... there may be some rejoicing over nxxxxr free. It may be that here, but I have not run across it. ... The soldiers almost to a man swear they will never fight for the freedom of the nxxxxr. I suppose we will have to if our commanders order it. ... Best wish I have for the authors of the Emancipation Proclamation is that I had them within my power. I would have the fun of discharging my rifle a few times more. If soldiers came from Nettecoula east their votes at the next election, I think without a doubt that the state would go Democratic. ... I have got sick of the wholesale slaughter business that is being carried on. A man that has never seen a battle knows nothing about it. The last battle beat all I have ever seen and that was the sixth general engagement I have been in. ..."
