Union civilian 4pp. letter written by Leyden McKeen, July 12, 1863 to Hiram H. Chesley who mustered into "H" Co. ME 20th Infantry, was wounded 7/2/1863 Gettysburg and discharged for disability on 4/29/1864. The original cover is addressed to Chelsley at the Spoval Hospital, Portsmith Grove, Rhode Island. In part, "I got a letter from you a week ago last last Saturday and was very glad to hear that you have gut better, you said your hand had healed up. I was fraid you would have to have it cut off. It will be better than no hand. .... we heard from Alden. John wrote that he heard that Alden was sunstruck and died but we got a letter from Alden the second day of July and he said that wernt well and that he was in the hospital. They say that Hiram Chesley is wounded in the neck ... old Ward Cuningham was killed, oh I should rather be in the hospital than be fighting. I should think Mr. Cunningham would feel bad he wanted his boys to go. I should feel guity if I coxed any one to go. I should think our folks would feel guity for teasing you to go. I think you would bin better off if you had staid here but it can't be helped now. Mr. Orr says if Samey was old enough to go he should think twas his duty to go. I dont think it is a duty to have our friends go out ther and get shot. What do you think about it. ...."
