Union soldier letter, 4pp., signed by Oliver Outcult who, on 8/23/1862, mustered into "F" Co. OH 79th Infantry, datelined Headquarter 79th Ohio Volunteers, Near Atlanta, August 9, 1864. In part, "For I really believe slavery is the entire and only cause of the war... and the work is progressing finely, and many a man and women who three years ago were held in bondage are now free. As for the negro being equal to the white man. My opinion is this. That they are an inferior race and can never equal the white race in intellect or education and I am giving them a country to themselves, there to live alone and no one to interrupt them. .... If they require their services as soldiers, I say take them. For I am willing for a negro to take my place in the ranks and let the Rebels shoot at him instead of me. ...
