Imprint, 4pp., Head-Quarters Department of West Va., Cumberland MD, April 7, 1864, General Orders No. 12. The General Court Martial of Captain Peter D. Ranke of the 14th Regiment, Pa. Vol. Calvary provides the specifications of the four charges, the verdict for each, and finally the sentence. Part of the Sentence is " he be reduced in ranks and marked on the left cheek with the letter "D", two inches in length in indelible ink .... three years of hard labor ... to have during that confinement, a twelve pound ball attached to his leg by a 6 foot chain ...."
