Union soldier's 3pp. letter written by Charles R. Dougherty who on 8/23/1861 mustered into "A" Co. NJ 7th Infantry . He was wounded and was discharged for wounds on 9/12/1864. The letter comes with the original cover addressed to Asst. Surgeon J.M. McCalla, Seminary Hospital, Georgetown DC. Dateline; Philadelphia, August 20th, 1864. In part, "I suppose you thought that I had forgotten you. Well I do not wonder for I have been dilatory in writing. ... Two or three days after I got home I had a touch of that fever but soon recovered from it. ... My wound is entirely well but never-the-less, I am compelled to use my extra pair of legs yet. Shortly after I got home I had no better sense than to fall down the stairs and hurt myself very much. My leg and foot swelled up very much but does not give me much pain ... Doctor, what do you think would be best for me tom rub my leg with to take down the swelling ..."
