A great immediate postwar Civil War veteran's broadside, 13 1/2" x 21", entitled: "Gloucester in the Rebellion. A List of the Soldiers and Sailors who served from Gloucester during the war of 1861 to 1865 For the Preservation of the Union. Compiled By The Monumental Committee of Post 45, GAR." A complete roster of the Massachusetts town's veterans include those who survived as well as those who paid the ultimate price to help preserve the Union. Examples include Pvt. Edward Allen of the 1st Mass. who was killed in action at the battle of the Wilderness, May 5, 1864 and Pvt. Francis Allen, also of the 1st, who died at Andersonville, Sept. 14, 1864. Many more men obviously survived the war and among those are veterans of the US Colored Troops including George A. Adams, Amos Andrews and Hiram Averill, Jr. all of the 25th USCT.
