James K. Kerr enlisted on 10/18/1861 as a Major on 10/18/1861 he was commissioned into Field & Staff PA 4th Cavalry. Kerr was promoted to Lt Colonel 3/12/1862 and Colonel 9/18/1862. He Resigned on 5/17/1863. Three ID'd possessions of Kerr include: A three panel mirror, opened to 11-1/2" x 4-1/2" bears his name on the pressed board backer, "Colonel J.K. Kerr 4th PA Cavalry". ... plus, 1861 "Cavalry Tactics or Regulations for The Instruction ...." book, 217pp., Washington, bears his signature on the front end paper, "Col. J.K. Kerr, $th Pa, Cav." ... and a 2nd book, 1862 "Cavalry Tactics, Third Part, ...", 111pp., plus 22 tipped-in illustrated pages..
