The black oilcloth shows only one minor hole. But, in white ink, it is identified on the inside of the cap as "GAR Post 113, Boston Mass." The post was active from 1867. It is interesting to note that Edward Wilkinson Kinsley was a Civil War soldier from Boston who was an abolitionist, and helped to raise Afro-American troops for the Union Army. Kinsley helped raise the 54th Massachusetts Regiment, the first African-American regiment of the Civil War, along with the 55th Massachusetts Regiment. He also went on to raise the 35th Colored Regiment of U.S. troops, also known as the 1st North Carolina Colored Regiment.
