William Drayton Sr. (1732-1790) was chief justice of the British American Province of East Florida and a United States district judge of the United States District Court for the District of South Carolina. Drayton received a recess appointment from President George Washington on November 18, 1789, to the United States District Court for the District of South Carolina, to a new seat authorized by 1 Stat. 73. He was nominated to the same position by President Washington on February 8, 1790. He was confirmed by the United States Senate on February 10, 1790. An Autograph Letter Signed, "Wm Drayton" to Elias Bowdin, 1pp, datelined Charleston South Carolina, March 14 1786. In large part, "I am afraid that a letter I did myself some months ago has not reached your hands. It was to inform you by Direction of the South Carolina Society for promoting and improving agriculture, that you were unanimously elected an honorary member thereof. ..."Organized in Charleston in 1785 as the South-Carolina Society for Promoting and Improving Agricultural, and Other Rural Concerns, the society was incorporated in 1795 as the Agricultural Society of South Carolina (a name which was still in use in 1920). Members of the Society were aristocratic plantation owners from the Charleston District.
