He paying you the caption and goal fees New York January 12th 1799 Your Servant...To Mr. William Paskemy, Keeper of the Debtors, Prison in New York." The reverse is docketed, "James F. Clark Discharge 9am January 12th, 1799", and, "James F. Clark, Discharge Rec'd, January 12th 1799"…In addition, a book 'Debtors and Creditors in America ... 1607-1900' softbound, 1999, 304 pp. During the time of colonial America, many jurisdictions adopted the concept of debtors prison as was common in England at the time. While imprisonment provided an element of punishment, it clearly limited the debtor's ability to satisfy the claim against them. Modernization of credit laws and remedies led to the Federal elimination of imprisonment for creditors in 1833.
